Ofloxacin Tablets IP 200 mg

Introduction: 

Folflox-200 Ofloxacin tablets IP 200 mg are broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis, pneumonia, chlamydia, gonorrhea, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and infections of the prostate along with other medications, including treating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. It was approved by the FDA in 1990 for medical use.

Overview of Ofloxacin

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, that acts primarily as a potent bacteria killer. It is a third-generation fluoroquinolone after Ciprofloxacin. Ofloxacin is available in all dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, eye & ear drops, IV parentals, etc. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit the DNA replication of bacteria, which stops the growth and spread of bacterial infections.

Ofloxacin Tablets IP 200mg Uses and Indication:

Ofloxacin is a potent antibacterial drug that has multiple uses in several infections. It is used in combination with several other drugs while changing the combination, the role of ofloxacin changed. There are some important uses are listed below:

  • Ofloxacin tablet is used in Acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD
  • Ofloxacin is used in Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
  • Ofloxacin is used in Nongonococcal urethritis and cervicitis
  • Ofloxacin tablet is used in  Epididymitis
  • Mixed Infections of the urethra and cervix
  • Ofloxacin tablet is used in Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Ofloxacin is used in Uncomplicated cystitis
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Ofloxacin tablet is used in Prostatitis
  • Ofloxacin is used in Acute, uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea

Dosage and Administration:

Precise dosage advice for adults and children is important to ensure effective treatment with minimum risk of adverse effects. The right way to know the dose of ofloxacin tablets 200 mg is to consult a doctor and tell him your illness history, and let him decide an optimum dose quantity. 

For oral dosage form (tablets 200mg):
For treatment of infection:
  • Adults—200 to 400 milligrams (mg) every 12 hours for 3 to 14 days, depending on the medical problem being treated. Prostatitis is usually treated for 6 weeks. Gonorrhea is usually treated with a single oral dose of 400 mg. The right way of dose selection lets the doctor decide the dose for you.
  • Children—In Children's cases, never try to give any medicine to your child without the advice of a doctor.

Mechanism of Action:

Ofloxacin inhibits the bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. It binds these two enzymes and prevents further supercoiling of the DNA  of bacteria during the replication process. Thus, Ofloxacin hampers the bacterial DNA synthesis that becomes the cause of their death. 

Contraindications and Precautions:

An experienced physician can provide the right and complete information about the contradictions of Ofloxacin.  Sometimes a doctor makes the decision after checking the clinical conditions of a patient. 
  1. Contradiction in Children: Ofloxacin is not recommended for use in children or growing adolescents due to potential adverse effects.
  1. Duration of Use: Treatment with ofloxacin should not exceed 14 days in duration to mitigate potential risks. If it requires more then follow the guidance of a physician.

Drug Interactions:

Ofloxacin as a drug may interact with many drugs if they are not used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Some medicines that may interact with ofloxacin include:
  • Blood thinners (Acenocoumarol, warfarin, Strontium)
  • Hearth Rhythm( Dofetilide, Procainamide, Amiodarone, Quinidine, Sotalol)
  • Antacids

SIDE EFFECTS OF OFLOXACIN TABLET:

In general, Ofloxacin fluoroquinolones are well tolerated, with most side effects being mild to moderate. On occasion, serious adverse effects occur. Common side effects include gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as headache and insomnia.
