Introduction

Cefpodoxime  Tablets IP 200 mg is a third-generation cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) group antibiotic used to treat several types of bacterial infections. It stops the growth of bacteria as its mechanism of action. The word IP refers to Indian Pharmacopeia which means it is manufactured as per the parameters given in IP for cefpodoxime tablets. Postpod-200 is a famous Cefpodoxime Tablet IP 200 mg. According to Drug and Cosmetics Act 1940, Schedule H1 Drugs, cefpodoxime is covered in the Schedule H1 drugs strictly prescribed medicines list. 

According to IP 2010, Cefpodoxime Tablets contain not less than 90.0 percent and not more than 110.0 percent of the stated amount of cefpodoxime, C15H17N506S2.

Cefpodoxime is used for symptoms like ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat, pneumonia, gonorrhea, urinary tract infections, skin infections, etc. It is the third stage of diagnosis when Cefixime or Amoxyclav does not respond then Cefpodoxime is introduced to the patient.

Understanding Cefpodoxime Proxetil

Pharmacia and Upjohn developed and patented Cefpodoxime in 1980 in the United States. It was approved FDA in 1989 for medical use under the brand name Vantin in the country. 

 It is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is effective in lungs infection like pneumonia, urinary tract, and many more. It works by killing the bacteria to control the condition. 
It is generally safe for those who consume alcohol. 

It is found to be more effective than Cefixime and Cefaclor against Gram-negative bacteria, like Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenza, and Gram-positive bacteria, like Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. 

The chemical formula of Cefpodoxime is C21H27N5O9S2 and  Mol. Wt. 557.6 

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is 1-(isopropoxycarbonyloxy)ethyl (6R, 7R)-7-[2-(2-amino-4-thiazolyl)-(Z)-2-(methoxyimino) acetamido]-3-methoxymethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate. Cefpodoxime Proxetil contains not less than 690 micrograms and not more than 804 micrograms of cefpodoxime, ClsH17Ns06S2, calculated on an anhydrous basis.

Medical Uses of Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg

Cefpodoxime is third generation group antibiotic. It is used to treat several types of infections such as ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. 

Some specific medical uses of Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg  are listed below: 
  • Treating ear infections: Cefpodoxime is used to treat acute otitis media. It is a middle ear infection.
  • Sinus infections: Cefpodoxime is prescribed by physicians for the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis.
  • For Strep throat: Cefpodoxime is used to treat pharyngitis, which is an inflammation of the throat that is caused by Streptococcus bacteria.
  • Cefpodoxime in pneumonia: Cefpodoxime is very effective in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia. Further, it leads to a lung infection that is not caused by hospital-acquired bacteria.
  • Gonorrhea: Cefpodoxime can be used to treat gonorrhea, It is a sexually transmitted infection that is caused by Neisseria gonorrhea bacteria. It is easily cured by Cefpodoxime under the guidance of a doctor.
  • Urinary tract infections: Cefpodoxime can be used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections, which are infections of the bladder and urethra.

Dosage and Administration

Recommended dosage guidelines for adults: 

  • Oral dose (Suspension and tablet): For adults and teenagers above 12 years daily dose is recommended 200 mg twice a day or 200 mg after 12 hours.
  • For children below 12 years of age: It totally depends on the symptom for which it is taken. Ask your pediatrician for the right dose, it may be 50 mg to 100 mg after each 12 hours. 

Special considerations for children and elderly patients:

If elderly patients have any kidney-related problems then tell your doctor so that he can adjust the dose accordingly. Do not hide any such disease from the doctor. In the case of infants, the use of Cefpodoxime is done in special conditions, generally, other safe antibiotics are introduced in infants. Follow the instructions of the pediatrician and do not give self-medication to newborn babies.

How to take Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg:

Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg are taken one tablet in 12 hours for 5 to 14 days. The course of days depends on the type of infection for which it is intended to consume. Tablets can be taken with or without food. 

Potential Side Effects of Cefpodoxime 

Common side effects of Cefpodoxime:

Cefpodoxime is a strong antibiotic. It has a broad area of working on bacteria. Since it is a highly active antibiotic, it has some common side effects that include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, dizziness, and fatigue.

Rare but severe adverse reactions:

Serious side effects of Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg are rare, but they can happen in some cases. Some of the serious side effects of Cefpodoxime Tablets IP 200 mg include:
  • Allergic reaction
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney damage
  • Seizures
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a serious skin reaction)
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis (a serious skin reaction)

            Clinical Trial and Studies on Cefpodoxime:

            1. A clinical trial  (NCT00194532) was performed with the sponsorship of the University of Washington. The clinical trial started in 2005 and was completed in February 2009. It was performed on 300 patients. In this clinical trial, Ciprofloxacin was found more effective than Cefpodoxime in treating acute cystitis in women. 
            2. A clinical trial to Evaluate the Safety, Tolerability, and Pharmacokinetics of ETX0282 when administered orally to healthy Participants, was started on 16.03.2018 and completed on 11.09.2019, Total number of enrollments was 99. It was found well tolerated by healthy patients.
